REALTORS® are committed to abiding by fair housing laws and the Code of Ethics. But sometimes, our brains take shortcuts that can lead us astray. In this 3-hour CE course, you'll learn tactics to interrupt stereotypical thinking and avoid fair housing pitfalls. Learn about the mind science of identity & engage in exercises to help you foster business relationships with clients of all backgrounds.

Bias Override: Overcoming Barriers to Fair Housing helps real estate professionals interrupt stereotypical thinking so they can avoid fair housing pitfalls and provide equal professional service to every customer or client. Participants will examine the history of bias in real estate, learn about the mind science of identity, study how implicit bias can result in fair housing violations, and engage in interactive exercises to enhance communication skills and business relationships with clients of all backgrounds. 

Learning Objectives 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to: 

•    Describe the history of bias and discrimination in real estate to understand how neighborhoods became segregated and appreciate the challenges many consumers still face because of their identities.

•    Explain how implicit bias may result in violations of Fair Housing laws and industry ethics.

•    Identify interventions to prevent implicit bias, identity anxiety, and stereotype threat from influencing behavior so that consumers are treated with equal concern, respect, and fairness.

•    Increase personal motivation to confront these phenomena in their business and community.

 

Instructor:

Ann R. Thompson, Master of Science in International Real Estate. A professional speaker and graduate of the National Speakers Association. Ann has over 35 years of experience in the real estate profession.

As an instructor, she has worked with various real estate schools and conducted several real estate sales training workshops for Brokerages. Ann co-authored the “How to Soar in Sales” training course and created a Boot Camp training course. This training has been instrumental in launching numerous successful real estate careers. In addition to teaching Florida-prescribed pre, and post-licensing courses, Ann is a Faculty Instructor with Florida Realtors.

She teaches, Completing an Effective Purchase & Sales Contract, Fair Housing & Diversity, Professional Standards, Goal Setting & Business Planning, Newly Licensed? Now What? And Property Management and Common Ownership.

The Greater Tampa REALTORS® awarded Ann with its Pedagogy Award for her valuable knowledge instructional skills and abilities to bring forth higher professional standards, member satisfaction, and organizational value. She earned a Gold Standard Instructor (GSI) Certification from the Real Estate Educators Association.

Ann has served on several committees at her Local Association as well as Florida Realtor. She currently serves as a Director for Florida Realtors.

Ann is an active community member in Tampa. She received the Speaker of the Year Award from the Hillsborough County Public School Board. This recognition was for motivating students on improving critical thinking skills and fostering healthy relationships.
